Work Groups - Specifications

BPMI.org complements initiatives such as J2EE and SOAP that enable the convergence of legacy infrastructures toward process-oriented enterprise computing, and initiatives such as ebXML, RosettaNet, BizTalk, WSDL, UDDI, tpaML, and E-Speak that support process-oriented business-to-business collaboration.

BPMI.org defines open specifications such as the Business Process Modeling Language (BPML) and the Business Process Query Language (BPQL) that will enable the standards-based management of e-Business processes with forthcoming Business Process Management Systems (BPMS), in much the same way SQL enabled the standards-based management of business data with off-the-shelf Database Management Systems (DBMS).

BPML

The Business Process Modeling Language (BPML) is a meta-language for the modeling of business processes, just as XML is a meta-language for the modeling of business data. BPML provides an abstracted execution model for collaborative & transactional business processes based on the concept of a transactional finite-state machine. More on BPML...

BPMN

The Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) specification provides a graphical notation for expressing business processes in a Business Process Diagram (BPD). The BPMN specification also provides a binding between the notation's graphical elements and the constructs of block-structured process execution languages, including BPML and BPEL4WS. The first draft of BPMN was made available to the public on November 13, 2002. More on BPMN...

BPQL

The Business Process Query Language (BPQL) defines a standard interface to forthcoming Business Process Management Systems (BPMS). It allows system administrators to manage the BPMS and business analysts to query the instances of business processes it executes. More on BPQL...

BPEL WS

Position Paper August 2002: A Convergence Path toward a Standard BPM Stack

The release by BEA, IBM, and Microsoft of BPEL4WS, a new language for the modeling of executable business processes, adds another candidate specification to the emerging standard BPM stack. The future directions announced for BPEL4WS follow the footsteps of BPML identifying possible paths of convergence for the BPM industry.
