BPMI.org (the Business Process Management Initiative) is a non-profit organization that empowers companies of all sizes, across all industries, to develop and operate business processes that span multiple applications and business partners, behind the firewall and over the Internet.
The Initiative's mission is to promote and develop the use of Business Process Management (BPM) through the establishment of standards for process design, deployment, execution, maintenance, and optimization. BPMI.org develops open specifications, assists IT vendors for marketing their implementations, and supports businesses for using Business Process Management technologies.
BPMI.org has been initiated by Intalio and founded in August 2000 by Aventail, Black Pearl, Blaze Software, Bowstreet, Cap Gemini Ernst & Young, Computer Sciences Corporation, Cyclone Commerce, DataChannel, Entricom, Intalio, Ontology.Org, S1 Corporation, Versata, VerticalNet, Verve, and XMLFund. The current list of members can be found at www.bpmi.org/members.esp
BPMI.org is currently developing the Business Process Modeling Language (BPML) and the Business Process Query Language (BPQL). In the future, BPMI.org will develop additional business process modeling languages that apply to specific applications, within specific verticals.
The Business Process Modeling Language (BPML) is a meta-language for the modeling of business processes, just as XML is a meta-language for the modeling of business data. BPML provides an abstracted execution model for collaborative & transactional business processes based on the concept of a transactional finite-state machine.
The Business Process Query Language (BPQL) defines a standard interface to forthcoming Business Process Management Systems (BPMS). It allows system administrators to manage the BPMS and business analysts to query the instances of business processes it executes.
BPMI.org and ebXML are addressing complementary aspects of e-Business process management. While ebXML provides a standard way to describe the Public Interface of e-Business processes, BPMI.org provides a standard way to describe their Private Implementation.
The first draft for the Business Process Modeling Language (BPML) was made available to the public on March 8, 2001. The first public draft of the Business Process Query Language (BPQL) is targeted for release in the first quarter of 2003. Interested parties should join the Business Process Management Initiative to get access to early drafts.
